While eagerly installing Offline Gmail on my computers I ran into the fact the Google Gears is actually not available for 64-bit Linux. I managed to find a number of builds out there, but none that would actually work for me with Offline Gmail or the new WordPress.
Building it myself wasn’t as straight forward as I hoped, so let me safe you the hassle and allow me to share the result with you:
This build was tested with Firefox 3.0.5 on (k)Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid. Enjoy!
EDIT: Firefox reports the download to be 4G, but it will complete successfully after 2.7M.
Updated binary:
gears-linux-opt-05180.xpi
This build was tested with Firefox 3.0.9 on (k)Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. (It will install but NOT work on Firefox 3.5.)
Updated binary:
gears-linux-opt-05210.xpi
Did not change anything for Firefox 3.5 this time, since it doesn’t work anyway.

Thanks for reporting the 4G issue. Let me look into that. (When using wget to download the file, it reports the file size correctly at 2.7M.)
To those about to download: Firefox reports the download to be 4G, but it will complete successfully after 2.7M.

not working in firefox 3.1 under intrepid. It installs fine (probably because I have nightly tester tool installed). It displays a menu entry in the tools menu in firefox, but that entry doesn’t do anything. Gmail and every other google gears enabled website is not recognizing that google gears is installed.
Any solution for using google gears in firefox 3.1?

Excellent work. I had been searching for this. I’ll try to help spread the word. I wish x64 was the standard so everything would be built for it by default. The transition from 32 to 64 has been going on for ages.

Niels, could you provide build instructions, so those interested can build this themselves (that would be me) without reinventing the wheel?
Like or Dislike:

@Maxim the build instructions are provided by Google. From there on it’s just resolving missing dependencies which will depend on your current installation.
The only ‘special’ thing to do is to change set the targetPlatform to Linux_x86_64-gcc3 in base/firefox/install.rdf.m4.

Niel,
Thanks for this – I think it might be helpful to write an article on how you packaged up the xpi as it will allow people to light their candle from your flame and enjoy the latest builds of Google by learning from your experience.
Just a thought, meanwhile looking forward to your next release

Hi Ed, no problem:
svn checkout http://gears.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ gears-read-only
cd gears-read-only/
cd gears/
make MODE=OPT
That’s it. Despite what you may read elsewhere, there are no patches needed to make things work on 64-bit. (Not for the last couple of versions anyway.) Occasionally things may be broken an not compile. Usually the fix is pretty straight forward, but if not you can just wait a few days and try an updated version. The binary uploaded today compiled flawlessly with above instructions.
